This year we planned our summer vacation around being in Saint Paul, Minnesota for the National Senior Games in July, to watch my uncle Don Phillips compete. He had been competing in the Senior Games for 28 years without winning a gold medal, and this year was a major breakthrough for him: he won six gold medals, in the 85-89 men’s age group. He dominated the running events, winning the 50, 100, 200, 400 and 800 meters, and to top it off he won one more gold medal at the end of the week in a team event, the 4×100 relay.
I had photographed Don at the Senior Games in Cleveland in 2013, so I knew the routine and came well prepared to document his events this year. Here are a few photo albums I put together during and after the trip:
- Don’s First Gold Medals! – an album I posted after his first two gold medals, before I knew that he would go one to win four more
- Airbound Athletes at the Senior Games 2015 – various other photos from the preliminary track and field heats
- 100 meters – Senior Games 2015 – various photos of groups competing in the 100 meters for age brackets 65 through 89 years old
- Senior Games 2015 – Don Phillips and family – all of my photos of Don competing this year, and a few family photos as well
It was a thrill to watch Don’s amazing performance in these events. He has prepared so thoroughly, for so many years, and he managed to beat some very tough competition in several close races. I also posted some photos from our 3-week road trip to attend the games, in the album Road Trip 2015.
